So what is sampling and how does Ableton’s Simpler sampler work? Well, let Laura Escudè show you!
In this “sampling-for-beginners” tutorial renowned violinist and electronic music performer Laura Escudè takes you through the very basics of sampling using Ableton Live’s stock sampler, Simpler. She starts you off with an overview detailing the history of audio sampling from it’s nascent beginnings with the famous Fairlight CMI through to software samplers of the present day.
From there you’re off to a zoomed-in, zoomed-out look at the Simpler Plugin that is included with every copy of Live. Laura takes you through all of Simpler’s parameters from envelopes to LFO’s showing you how they work and how she uses them in her music. She discusses the differences between Simpler and Live’s premium instrument, Sampler … and also shows you how they work together!

Remixing Techniques: Time Stretching
In this learning lessons, author Josh Harris demonstrates time-stretching techniques in four of the major digital audio workstations: Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Reason, and Ableton Live. Josh covers the basic time-stretching treatments, where minimal tempo adjustment is needed, and then moves into more difficult territory—remixing at a much slower or faster tempo than what the original tracks were recorded at—where time stretching is pushed to the extreme. Another technique shows how to create a composite vocal from multiple time-stretched tracks. Each lesson employs real-world musical examples to clearly show where each time-stretching technique is useful and how the results of time stretching affect the sound of a song.

Melodyne Advanced Techniques
In this course, producer and engineer Skye Lewin reveals the techniques that professional musicians and producers use to get the best-sounding results from Melodyne. The course covers digital audio workstation (DAW) and session preparation, and shows how to perform rhythm and pitch corrections on both lead and background vocals. It includes lessons on importing and exporting tracks between the DAW and the standalone version of Melodyne, as well as utilizing Melodyne as a plug-in, through ReWire, and through Melodyne Bridge. Skye also shows how to use a MIDI keyboard to edit the pitch of a recorded performance in Melodyne and how to trigger a MIDI instrument using an audio recording.

The Foundation Of Synthesis 104: Control Voltage
Marc Doty—lead educator for The Bob Moog Foundation—is back with a series of tutorials in this course on Voltage Control.
But what is Voltage Control and how do you use it in the world of hardware synths? Well, here’s the story: In the early days of sound synthesis, if you wanted your sounds to change or evolve in any way whatsoever, you had to do it manually. Need the pitch to go up? Grab the the oscillator knob and turn it! Want the volume to change? Again, grab the volume knob! What about sequencing a series of notes? Well, before voltage control, you had to record every pitch onto magnetic tape and cut them all together in the order and rhythm that you wanted. It was hard work to create electronic music way back when!
Voltage control forever changed all that! And in this course Marc Doty shows how different hardware synth designers harness the power of VCs to transform and supercharge electronic music composition. Taken one step further you’ll see how Voltage Control was the mother of MIDI… and we all know how powerful MIDI is!
